Fens, bogs, swamps and marine estuaries are the earth’s most desirable and dependable resources. Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Proulx explores their vital role in preserving the environment, and their systemic destruction in the pursuit of profit. This is both a revelatory history and an urgent plea for wetland reclamation, from one of our greatest prose stylists.
Annie Proulx is the author of eleven books, including the novels The Shipping News and Barkskins, and the story collection Close Range. Her many honours include a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Award, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize and a PEN/Faulkner Award. Her story ‘Brokeback Mountain’ was made into an Academy Award-winning film. Fen, Bog & Swamp is her second work of nonfiction. She lives in New Hampshire.
